In Lehmann's Terms

It’s Offical; NBA officiating if offensive

We all know that the NBA is the hardest sport to official.  We have heard the conspresaces of wanting Kobe and Lebron in the Finals. And we all know that the superstars get preferential treatment.  unfortunately for us fans, it has gotten worse and worse as the seasons pass.  So much, that teams that do not have one of the couple superstars are at a disadvantage.

I found out watching Sunday’s finals rematch that Orlando is one of those teams at a disadvantage.  This was evident as Orlando could not be as physical as the Lakers were during the game.  We will go through a couple of examples.

1Q 2:06-Kobe Pushes Pietrus to the ground when Pietrus tries to front him.  No foul called, Kobe gets the ball and draws a foul.  Pietrus clearly commits the foul, but the officials call it on Howard.  Dwight’s second and he goes to the bench.

2Q 8:40-Aretest clearly pushes Pietrus down to grab a rebound.

2Q 6:37 Odom drives to the lane and Howard does everything possible to avoid a foul call and some how the official calls Dwight with his 3rd foul.  Jeff Van Gundy after the foul, “There’s no one as good as Dwight Howard who takes more bad calls.”

2Q 6:17 Pietrus drives to the lane.  Bynum jumps straight up and gets called for a foul.  Marc Jackson after the foul, “And you talk about according to the rules, that’s not a foul on Andrew Bynum.”

2Q 5:16 With Nelson driving the ball to the lane, the officals call an offensive foul on Nelson on a great acting job by Fisher.

2Q 3:14 It looks as if Fisher tries to foul Nelson by half court and no whistle was blown.  No effect on the play, but after the touch offensive foul on Nelson, this should have been called.

3Q 11:26 Double Technical foul of Kobe and Barnes.  I thought it was called a little early, but it was understandable.  More Barnes fault then any.

3Q 9:32 Matt Barnes follows up a miss with a dunk and ended up with an elbow to the throat from Kobe Bryant.  Some how Dwight Howard ends up with a technical foul there.  I’m not sure what he said, but it drew a technical.  Even JVG thought it should have been a tech on Kobe.

3Q 3:09 Lewis with the ball, nelson comes around and Lewis puts his body out to nip the defender.  Called an illegal screen.  JVG can’t believe the call.

3Q 1:29 Matt Barnes called for offensive foul for trying to block out Bryant.  Could be because of the history between them in this game, but still a cheap call.

3Q 27.8 Pau Gasol post up Howard.  Tries to run through Howard to get to the other block and takes a swing at Howard’s arm.  Dwight Howard is called for his fourth foul.  Marc Jackson say after the reply, “That’s not a foul on Dwight Howard.”

4Q 9:47 Pietrus tries to deny Kobe the ball after being posted up.  Foul called on Pietrus  for touching Bryant in the fourth quarter.

4Q 8:44 Same play as above, but replace Pietrus with Carter.

4Q 7:47 Barnes intentionally bumps into Kobe Bryant for the 498 time.  Great poise to try to keep Barnes from being ejected.

4Q 6:27 Gasol gets very aggressive with Howard on the offensive side of the ball.  Dwight gets tangled up and pulls Gasol’s shirt out.  No call on Gasol and six seconds later tries to scalp Dwight’s transition dunk.

4Q 6:32 Matt Barnes inbounds the ball with a perfect alley to Petruis.  Official wave it off because it was caught “above the cylinder.”  Replay shows it was not caught above the cylinder.

4Q 4:08 Blocking foul on Fisher not called.  Results in a turnover for Orlando.

And that is where my DVR stopped recording the game.  I know, I need to switch back to Comcast.

Reviewing this game will show that Dwight Howard just doesn’t get the respect that the others get.  He plays hard and takes a lot of cheap fouls that don’t get called for him on the other end.  Come playoff time, this will become a huge factor if the NBA does not do something about this.

I understand officiating games is not the easiest thing in the world to do, but the inconsistent and favorable foul calls is becoming ridiculous; and a big reason fans from past generations have stopped watching the new NBA.

Game Notes:  What is Rashard Lewis getting paid to do for the Orlando Magic.  For a player getting a max contract, he does none of the following: play defense, make layups, play defense drives to the paint, play defense post up smaller defenders, play defense takes smart shots when not open, and oh, play defense.  His production is way down from last year and has not been able to find any sort of rhythm with Vince Carter in the lineup.

Is Orlando going to find a leader that will step to people and have them calm down.  No one went to Matt Barnes and told him to cool off because they really needed him.  We are lucky that the officals didn’t give him his second tech.  I would have sent him to the showers early.

When did Reddick forget how to shoot.  At Duke he couldn’t miss.  I have always thought they could run him off screens like Reggie Miller, but he is going to have to start hitting those shots.

Matt Barnes looked like a complete tool when Kobe failed to flinch at Barnes ball fake to the face.  Just play ball Matt, just play ball.
